Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi (also known as T’ai Chi Ch’uan) is an ancient martial art that originated in China over 3000 years ago. Historical accounts offer differing perspectives on its origins, with some claiming that its initial interest was self-control and health benefits and others claiming it was originally made for self-defense. At Shaolin Arts, we provide both options.

What should I wear to Tai Chi class?

You don’t need highly specialized clothing to practice Tai Chi, but at Shaolin Arts, you’ll wear a special school uniform. The uniform represents a unity with yourself, the studio, and the art of Tai Chi. If you’re wearing shoes, ensure they’re light with a thin sole, not bulky or thick, and they’re approved by your Tai Chi instructor. We keep our space clean, so Tai Chi should be practiced with special shoes that aren’t used for casual strolling.

Is Tai Chi a martial art?

Yes! Tai Chi is a martial art that originated in China. It was originally developed for combat and self-defense, but it’s been adjusted to serve as more of a meditative exercise in recent years. At Shaolin Arts, we can teach you both the self-defense and meditative aspects of Tai Chi depending on your goals.

Can Tai Chi help prevent falls?

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrated Health, Tai Chi studies have shown strong promise in preventing falls. Because it’s an exercise rooted in balance, movement, and flexibility, it makes participants more aware of their bodies and surroundings.

How often should I practice Tai Chi?

Tai Chi is perfectly safe to practice every day. Unlike some high-impact exercises requiring ample recovery time, Tai Chi is a low-impact aerobic exercise that can be great for your body if you practice for a few minutes daily. However, it’s important to be mindful of your own physical capabilities—don’t push yourself too hard if you strongly feel the need to take breaks.
